How to do cryptic crosswords and acrostic puzzles
Hi Everyone
I was browsing the newsagency the other day and came across a Lovatts pack for $9.50, in the pack:
- Holiday Crossword Collection No. 68
- Christine's Cryptic Crossword Collection Vol. 10, and
- How to do Cryptic Crosswords :a step-by-step guide to cracking cryptic crosswords by Christine Lovatt, plus World Crossword Champion Sue
Valenta shares her acrostic secrets with you.
I've always avoided cryptic crosswords and acrostic puzzles because I just didn't get it, the clues always seemed unsolvable and I thought I'd miss
out on these types of competitions because I couldn't do them. Now I feel better about how to work them out. I haven't read the booklet yet, but
will be looking at it today.

I feel totally stupid when looking at cryptic crosswords. My Dad prefers them. He tried to expalin it to me but it just didn't make sence. Im very
capable at all other types of puzzles and problem solving. A big PASS on the cryptic ones. |

Years ago my Nanna tried to explain cryptics to me and I just didn't get it so I ignored them, but loved normal crosswords. Then over time, I learned
how to do cryptics & I love them! Sometimes in the Lovatt's ones she'll give little tips & hints, and she also has some crosswords which have
cryptic clues & straight clues (all with the same answers) - by using these, I learned how to do them & it just makes sense now.
I'm addicted. |

Cryptic crosswords are my favourite. I have been doing them since I was about 10 or 12 (and that's plenty of years ago now!)
They make your brain think much more laterally than a normal crossword and the more you do them, the better you become. To be honest the Lovatt's
cryptics are quite easy to solve compared to the ones you may find in the daily newspapers - like the Independent - that's horrendously
difficult....you need to be a top scholar to work out some of those.
If you need a hand with any of the answers when you come to try the cryptics....never hesitate to ask....you always find someone on here who will
help.

I know this may be a dumb question but what is an "acrostic"
puzzle??
Edit: It's okay I looked it up. But just incase someone else was wondering the same thing
It's a series of lines or verses in which the first, last, or other particular letters form a word, phrase, the alphabet, etc. |

I love plain crosswords but not much good at the cryptic ones. Do love the arrow puzzles. |

Cryptic crosswords are my favourite. I've been doing them for years and getting better with practice. It does take a while to get your head around
them but by doing them and checking the answers you eventually get the hang of them.
I find Womans Day ones fairly easy. New Ideas are a little harder but you have the advantage of the answers being in the same issue so you can get a
little 'help'
