How to Win Competitions

I just found the following on a recent newsletter on how to win competitions - it says never rhyme - I always rhyme - maybe that's why I never win!

I won my trip to London to Meet Jamie Oliver with rhyming! LOL! She said they loved the entry. I think it comes down to who is judging, I'm sure there are plenty out there who hate the odd rhymes, but I try and do a mix.

Interesting reading though. Thank you.

I agree Tess 12, my best wins came through rhyming. It really depends on the judges and what they prefer. :)

I've won my two biggest comps with rhyming so it's worked for me so far... I've read some of the witty 25 WOL that other people have submitted and I am bright green with envy at how creative some people are.

And London - omg - wow

LOL!! I had just sent this through to Andrew!!

I have never won anything other than WOL rhyme entries.
I have competed in WOL for 5-6 years.
I have now grossed over $200 + K.
My WOL are not always SPECIAL but they do standout for 3 reasons;
1.) Creative crafty entry (look at ME factor)
2.) Much time and thought in the effort.
3.) ALWAYS correct amount of words!

Never rhyme ..... (*&%^#$@@%^&;) that was me blowing a rasberry. Ha Ha Ha

I do kind of agree with the don't ALWAYS rhyme. Ie: Rhyme sometimes, but not other times. I have won with both rhyming and not rhyming.

But don't be overly creative? WTF does that mean?

This has been posted a few times before :)

The guy that wrote it has ZERO credibility

I've won BIG with rhyme & without rhyme so that's just nonsense...it's all got to do with the calibre of your answer.

I've rhymed and ummm exaggerated hee hee and had plenty of wins.

As for the men's comps - we all know they get heaps of entries... coz WE enter them pmsl.

Tye :)

Exactly Kismet.

There are good and catchy rhymes, and really bad ones. It's about how clever and relevant (and suitable to the company's image) your answer is. Not whether lines 2 & 4 rhyme.

I think it is probably true for some comps..I have never seen a rhyme win on Urbancinfile. I have had big wins with both rhyming and non-rhyming answers.

Saying never use rhyme is like saying all men like Fords.

Everyone is individual, including promoters and judges of competitions. What appeals to one, another may really dislike.

I've won big with entries using rhyme, limmerick, saucy one-liners and bland boring made no effort at all... buggered if I know the secret!! :P

Some promoters love rhymes, some hate them. It's a case of trying to work out who likes what. I've won heaps with rhymes.

I like to rhyme
all the time

Some other promoters just like honest answers and some like sob stories (which surprises me) and some just draw them out because they don't have the time and resources to appoint judges to read through thousands of entries.

There is no tried and true formula. It just depends who the judge is on the day (if it is judged) and if your answer appeals to them.

Are you infringing someone's copyright by posting that here?

posted 11-3-2011 @ 04:29 PM www

Probably!!!

But its VERY old news - I swear I read almost exactly the same thing about 8 years ago when I first started out...hope you're not having to pay for that newsletter :lol::lol::lol:
If you are they should be coming up with something a lot more up to date and dynamic;););)

I've won big things with rhymes and big things without rhymes, I go through phases, have been off rhymes for a while now but havent won anything for a while might have to go back to it.

As everyone said above it comes down to the judges, I tend to think the more sophisticated the demographic of the product, the less likely the judges are to appreciate a twee rhyme. But if we really knew what judges liked we would have a sure fire method of winning.

I won on Urbancinfile with a rhyming answer about 6 months ago.

Just discovered the quote in its original newsletter and yes you probably are breaching copyright!

Andrew will be pleased to know that lottos gets a mention.

"Purchase – any competition requiring the purchase of an item receives surprisingly few entries"

Seriously!!! Purchase comps get thousands of entries.

Also "Don't Lie" - well, there goes 75% of my answers :lol:

I agree with the "don't rhyme" - but that's because I can never think of any ;)

I've read this before in a book about comping - it's one person's point of view - very interesting read, but as other people have said - you never know who's judging the answers, and it rests entirely on the judges personal opinion of what's good and what's not.

"make sure you are not overly creative", "never rhyme", what codswallop - bet whoever wrote that has never won a WOL in their life.

It seems so many trip prizes (my ideal win) are WOLs - I've not had much success in the past. Any other tips or shared winning entries? :spin:
