My WOL wins have all been rhymes, mind you there are plenty I don't win. You have to be in it to win it I suppose. |

So Funny to read back over the posts in this thread. My then 5 year old is now 14, my then 7 year old is now 6 foot tall and has a driving licence and
my then 9 year old is a 2nd year uni student albeit still a drama queen.
None of my kids have truly caught the comping bug but are happy to adopt the winnings! They are the have a go occasionally compers who give up when
they don't win consistently.
Over the years I have tried everything from Rhymes to Puns to Snappy one liners to honest straight up answers and all have won/lost seemingly at
random.
After nearly 10 years in the business I cstill say just go for it...who knows what the promoters want...the only guarantee is if you don't enter you
won't win!

I recently won a trip through Nova and snow australia for 25wol, i didnt rhyme it but put a funny answer and the lady told me mine made her laugh out
lout thats why I won, have also won on rhyming so i think if its a clever rhyme go with it, or if I can think of a smart one liner I will use that!

I am probably the wrong person to respond as I don't win a lot of comps despite a lot of entering but the few WOL's I have won I have to say that
almost all were straight up answers. The again maybe the many many comps I didn't win were won by rhymes. Unfortunately there is no way to know the
answer LOL just to have fun speculating. If its multiple entry and a prize I really want I will sometimes do one of each just to cover all bases. |

Rhyming
How do you actually keep track of what comp's you've entered to know which rhyme got you over the line? |

I used to keep all my rhymes in a Word document but now I mostly work on them and save them in Lotto's Personal Notes attached to the comp thread.
The ones that come straight off the top of my head (and usually the ones that win) I generally don't save.
I often think I will reuse a non-winning answer in a future comp, but then I can't remember where I put it. I wish I was more organised. |

Haven't won a comp yet with a rhyme, but have won quite a few prizes from Urbancinefile with straight and true answers, and they read them because
they print the judges favourites on their site.
Have won other comps with answers i never expected to win, so just go for it and hope for the best |

I've been comping since December 2011 and mostly don't have time to do WOLs, though I try to from time to time. I do a lot of rhymes because I'm quite
good at them, but they haven't won for me. Most of my (I thought) witty answers didn't win.
However, I did win my biggest prize 2 months in - $5000 in Westfield vouchers plus VIP treatment etc. That was a straight answer to the question who
is your favourite on the red carpet? I put a very boring answer sucking up to Cate Blanchett because I thought they might like an Australian ( I do
like Cate).
Hubs won a phone and expensive ski goggles and pile of DVDs with a straight answer about his favourite Tom Cruise film.
And I won tickets to "The Mousetrap" with a simple rhyme. I don't think it matters whether they rhyme or not. What matters is that the answer is
either witty, from the heart or a clever slogan. If they rhyme helps that, go for it.
I would say that I've seen a lot of rhymed blog posts. My guess is that blogs just want you to contribute to the chattiness of the blog, not to get
clever with rhymes and slogans. But what do I know?

Got to agree with you here Christinamarina ... most of my winning wol entries were the first thing that came into my head ... which is usually my
first entry. Then I enter again, and again, and again ... with carefully thought up entries ... and never win a single thing.]
It's got to the point where, if something doesn't immediately spring to mind, I even consider whether it is worth entering at all.
Also, like you, I usually don't keep copies of these first "winning" entries as I am so disorganised! |

I have won two WOL in the last month with rhyming poems, so I am pleased with that. I have discovered I really enjoy writing rhyming poems for my WOL
answers.
It is a plus to get some fun out of entering a comp! Although if I am tired late at night, I can't think straight to make a poem so I keep my poem
composing for the morning!
I think that you can win with either a rhyming poem or a snappy answer...it doesn't have to be one or the other; they will most likely choose a good
poem over a weak one-liner, or a good one-liner over a bad poem.

WOLs are the bane of my comping life, but worst of all are the purchase comps that now often seem to be requiring WOLs as well. For example, the
recent Simone Perele one where you had to not only buy a bra (close to $100 outlay! ), but also do a WOL. I think it would be much fairer for a purchase comp to be a straight random draw - plus they'd sell a lot more
product that way. |

I've really enjoyed read this thread... however it messed with my head a little, with some Gold and Silver Star members saying they were just starting
out comping... then I realised the thread was quite old. Great read, great info. |

I love purchase with WOL too. We're off to Ascot in June, as a result
