Tip re: winning WOL comps
Hi everyone,
Im pretty new to this and have been entering a few WOL comps. I have read a few blogs that suggest mentioning the promoter in the entry. I havent done
this to date but have a pretty key question about this tip.
Do I mention the company/brand running the comp OR do I mention the brand /company of the actual giveaway?
For example in the case of a magazine running a competition to win a holiday. Do I mention the magazine or the holiday prize brand?
Eg1 if Marie Claire ran a competition to win a hotel getaway to Versace resorts do I mention Marie Claire or Versace?
Eg 2 In the case of ANZ giving away a trip to Bali (thanks to Flight Centre) . do I mention ANZ or Flight Centre?
I thought about looking up who the promoter is in T&Cs but its usually the one giving it away which isnt always relevant to the response/entry
topic.

You can try with names, without names, every possibble combination! At the end of the day it's totally up to the judges. There is no one winning
formula.

i usually write what first comes to mind you win some you lose a lot i do anyway buts its fun trying |

As all the comps have different judges and as it is therefore very subjective, just have fun and enter what you like. you can't really pick it...

That's pretty funny enchanted spirit! Congrats.
Just goes to show there is no formula, and.....well that's funny I was just about to write "all the comps have different judges and so it's very
subjective" but gr82do beat me to it.  |

I am with you doosic. That is what I do. If I were a little more imaginative I might win a few more but I have fun trying. I have to say I spend about
two minutes tops on each of my WOL's but then again that could be why I don't win many. It always surprises me greatly when I do win one though and
when I do I have absolutely no idea what I wrote. I started saving them but in the end couldn't be bothered as it seemed too much like hard work and
not enough like fun. |

And some are drawn despite being 25wol so it doesn't matter what you write. I agree with gr82do.

I never mention the promoter or prize, as it would feel like......crawling !!
I prefer humour and honesty, and it seems to work..... |

If it's a travel prize I often mention the destination but often it's not appropriate to mention the sponsor/promoter anyway. I wouldn't obsess too
much about it, they're hard to win even when you write the best answer in the world.

Wow this is all great feedback and very insightful. I've been entering a stack of WOL comps and putting too much time into writing them. A little OCD.
Then I read about a guy who apparently used to judge heaps on comps. He said two things "rhyming is naff and gets very boring to the judges after
reading so many" and "make sure you always mention the promoter". We all of my entries have been rhymes and none have mentioned promoter . So it got
me thinking. I think the next few I will just try relaxing with it and being short and sweet (and honest). It does feel a little sucky mentioning the
promoter, but I must say when I was in marketing and did Judge the odd comp , it did catch my eye more. Marketers can be a little narcissistic (sp?!)
when it comes to their brand
Think the best thing to do is mix it up and see what happens!
I think I'll stop overthinking it too - thanks to your consistent advice on that one. Thanks Again to those who commented! |

I have a feeling that answers that mention the promoter appeal because I think some companies run these types of comps as a cheap alternative to
paying some expensive advertising company to come up with slogans/ideas for their campaigns.
I asked for feedback about my answer once from a promoter who kindly gave me some, but said he couldn't reveal the winning answer because they were
planning to use it in some form for an ad campaign.
So if you give them a good idea, they can use it because if you read the terms and conditions it clearly states that all entries become the property
of the promoter, so even if you don't win they can use your idea, but I think they might give the prize to the person whose idea they are thinking of
using to sort of be a "payment" for the idea!
Just guessing here, but it seems logical. So don't be surprised if you see you clever WOL idea in the company's next ad campaign, and unfortunately
you can't claim anything, because you sign away your intellectual property rights when you tick that little box agreeing to the terms and conditions.
It sort of sucks really...............but I keep on trying! |

Question I have been wondering... do u think the judges actually sit there and read everyone WOL? or maybe they just randomly choose any? based on
what people have said..kind of seems that way! |

JodieRachelle I think the general consensus is sometimes the judges read all entries, sometimes judges read a sample of entries and sometimes its a
draw!
Now if we just knew which time was which we would be on a winner!
I suggest you have a go at everything you are interested in winning, even if you can't think of anything to write...write something. At least if its a
draw...you are in to win!

If it's a Cadbury competition, run by Cadbury, and the prize is Cadbury merchandise/products. Then I mention how much I LOVE Cadbury chocolate.
If it is a Cadbury competition, run by Woman's Day - Woman's Day doesn't care how much you suck up to Cadbury. It's never going to use your ideas as a
slogan or a marketing campaign, so I might mention Cadbury, might not - depending on how many words I have left, and whether it fits into my answer.
If the prize is a trip to London - definitely mention London - but I only product/brand mention if it is run by the company who makes the product.

Some read every answer, some draw (then if the answer has "creative merit" and is under 25 WOL it is deemed to have met the T&Cs), others draw say
100 and judge those. Problem is, no one knows who does what (and there is no way of proving it if you object). A big clue is how big the comp is and
how many entries you are allowed. If it is an Australian wide comp, big brand, huge prize and unlimited entries - they are going to have thousands of
entries. I spend more creative time on the Once Only entries, if it's Daily - I just write anything. Also I highly suspect that MindFood, FeMail and
Girl.com.au are draws - but I could be wrong. |

Lots of funny responses here which I think means there is no winning formula - its up to the mood of the judge on the day!!! I've put in the promoter
lots and never won doing that yet ... here's hoping. |

I wrote a really good couple for why I shop at a local shopping centre once, then got another entry form. I was in a hurry to I wrote Parking is easy
and won the tumble dryer. When I asked if it was judged no-one had any idea. I think not. Probably the entry was on the top of hte box.
Cbell76 I have won about 4 coffee machine this year and they all had a rhyming 25WOL. That's Christmas done!

I've never won on any of my rhymes - they must be pretty bad (although I reckon they're good!).
I've won quite a few just writing the first thing that comes into my head, straight from the heart kinda stuff. Who knows if they're judged or drawn
but WOL are actually where all my biggest wins have come from.
It's just luck in the end if you happen to strike a chord with the judge. As everyone says, just enter, enter, enter and cross your fingers! |

I won a great comp to watch the cricket at the MCG (Worth $4,000 with flights accom and meet the players and merchandising)
You had to say where you would take your child to watch his/her first game of cricket.
As the prize was to the MCG on boxing day, I figured I had to mention this.
my answer was in poem style.
First impressions, are ones that last.
Young cricket fans, need capturing fast.
No better place, for them to be.
Than boxing day, at the MCG
It was a fantastic holiday and we got to go down near the change rooms and had a meet and greet with Brad Haddin and got lots of photos and
autographs.
My daughter also got to play cricket with the Milo into cricket players on the MCG oval during the lunch break, and was tickled to bits with it. |
