Time on WOLs

Time on WOLs

I've hit a bit of a wall this week with comping, as I am spending so much time and effort (particularly with WOLs) and not seeing any results.

How much time does everybody spend in WOLs, and do you think it has any impact on wins? My husband keeps saying to me they are all drawn out of a hat, and that I am wasting my time. What does everybody else think?

I spend no more than 5 mins and have won loads of them....:thumbup:

I can go anywhere from of the top of my head to days. I think your hubby is correct in a lot of comps - even if they say its judged I cannot believe they would read through 1,000s or tens of thousands of entries

the time I spend depends on the prize and whether or not I think it will be judged.

there's another thread somewhere, and a lot of speculation.

maybe draws
maybe they select a handful
maybe they're judged

we can never know for sure

Sorry, I just realised that I have posted this is the wrong section - that's what I get from posting from my iphone!

Thanks for the feedback! Its really disheartening when you spend so much time on them and think you come up with something really good, and then nothing! I think from now on I will just go with whatever pops into my head first! lol

I spend no time really. I see the question and type an answer count the words and maybe cut a few if too long and send it off and on it the next comp. I win a few and loose a lot lol. I don't take comping too seriously though and am in this more for the fun and the prizes are a bonus. This is my relaxation and if I laboured over my WOL it would start to seem like hard work. I am sure you will get completely different answers from the more prolific winners on here though.

Remember that it is quite subjective and as we do not know the judges you may as well go with first thoughts.

Prize wins 2014: $37680
Prize wins 2011: $13000
previous years about $25000

The harder you work the luckier you get

My best ones usually come straight off the top of my head, but if it's a big prize I usually put a bit more work in.

You need to remember that there are tonnes of other people entering also - I've entered with a heap of answers that I thought were crackers - I've told a few people and they 've said wow that's clever you'll win that for sure! but I rarely do. So what we think is good others might not.
I agree some are drawn some are judged who knows! And the same as others if its a great prize I will usually spend more time on my answer.
Just keep soldiering on. As they always say
'Enter and forget' :)

Read lots of examples of winners. I have thought mine was good, then read the winning one and realized mine was mediocre at best! How much time I spend on it depends on how much I want the prize and how many people I think are going to enter it.

I don't spend huge amounts of time on them either & have won lots. Occasionally I think about them a little or put them on the backburner and let my subconscious work on them (it usually doesn't!) but mostly I just make it up as I go along and forget about it.

I usually go with what i think of first- won some, lost some. urbancinefile read the answers as they publish judges favourite on the site, and I've won a few prizes from them and just told the truth when I've answered the question

Ditto! Usually spend more time on any trip prize that I think is more likely to be judged ie once only entry WOL.
Pretty happy with my strike rate for holidays. Most of unlimited WOLs I don't even bother entering.
