WOL competition tips!

Has anyone won a WOL competition by writing something very simple? If so, would you mind sharing?I always put off WOL competitions thinking my entries are boring because I can't think out of the box. Any inspirations...thanks!

It can be tough to think outside the box sometimes but I find WOL comps the best to enter, personally.

I usually struggle to scrape within the word limit each time, and almost always do a rhyme with hopefully some added humour.

It is good to think fresh and come up with one sharp witty line with a lot of impact.

MANY years ago my Mum won an MTV comp, a trip to London to meet see a show & 'have dinner' with Paul McCartney!!

The question was something along the lines of "what would it mean to you?"

She entered countless times, but her entry that won was "A dinner that would take a lifetime to digest"

... Hope that helps! :)

Some are judged and are really clever. Others may well be drawn. Different judges like different things. I just enter and forget.

Prize wins 2014: $37680
Prize wins 2011: $13000
previous years about $25000

The harder you work the luckier you get

I truly suck at WOL in my view but I have won some doosies over the years. I am of the thought (which is mine alone and possibly completely wrong) that very few would be judged by people with a literary background. If judged at all there is a good chance they are judged by an average Jo Blow who wouldn't know fancy and subtle smart answers if they bit them on the ....elbow. I just write what I feel and hope for the best. Some ya win and some ya lose. Such is life.

I was never very good at 25 words or less until Facebook competitions came about, then I saw what everyone else was saying and realised I was saying the exact same thing! My biggest tip is to be different... stand out from the crowd. If you have ever seen the LG Facebook competitions they pick simple but clever little rhymes. Being creative can be hard but the more you practice the more it starts to come naturally. Good-Luck =)

If you can't think of anything clever - enter anyway. A lot are drawn - especially nowdays where you can get 5,000 entries for a candle.

I try to vary my answers...sometimes a poem ( lots of poems win!), sometimes word play, sometimes funny, sometimes a straight answer...but I do find that if I have a personal story involved in the answer, at least it will be original! :) But mostly, like the others have said...enter, enter, enter! :) You never know what the judges are looking for or what others have written ( unless it is on Facebook of course!).

I like to use as few words as possible. If you can say it in 5 words, save the other 20 for arguing with yourself.
Won literary comps with high-brow answers.
Won fashion comps with low-brow answers. Consider your audience. With lots to read, sometimes your answer wont be afforded mental time to sink in.
Are they a company who takes themselves very seriously? Your answer may be hilarious, but would be inappropriate for them to choose.
I have won several big cash prizes with the same answer - when you come up with a gem, keep it close to your chest. I wouldn't use this answer in a Facebook comp where everyone else would see it, nor post it here.
I love puns, and poems, but haven't really had much success with them.
I've had far more success with WOL than anything else. Its your opportunity to take an advantage in the outcome. Mind you, I loose sleep at night thinking about big issues such as what to name a female Dinosaur....
Anagram of words? Sword. Use them wisely Grasshopper.

Few people nowadays will share their winning WOLs because plagiarism is so rife in comping.

My advice is to look for competitions where all the entries are published (not just Facebook!) and read them all. It's a real eye-opener and really hard to decide who would win. I have been surprised how many answers, even really good ones, are very similar and so lose their impact.
I have also been surprised how many really lame answers win, so have a go. You do get a feel for them the more you do. If there was a magic bullet for WOLs we'd all be doing it! It's still mostly luck..luck that your WOL catches the judges eye and luck that it even gets read.

There are some good threads on here about WOLs. Worth a read if you can find them.
