Just to be the first ! (First to post on the 'new' forum) ('free' stamps)

I have been searching thru the (clean ) rubbish bins at work for years now; finding unfranked stamps, and reusing the entire envelope for comp entries. I have sometimes found about $20 worth a week. It's hard to explain when I am 'caught' going thru the bins (I have a 'white collar/tie wearing' type job ) PB.

The thing's we do for Comp's.

I too would be in that bin!

MMM must be in our DNA. I also would grab a can of the foot path for the 5 cent refund. My father gets about $30 a week in summer off the beach in cans.

One of my friends who works at a post office keeps warning me not to use stamps for the second time. He says you'll cop a huge fine if you get caught!!
But I still do it anyway :)

Oh yes - I used to work for Aussie Post and it is very naughty to reuse postmarked stamps - big fines if caught. But I have had a number of penpals who do it all the time - always asking me to send back their stamp so they can use it again - and it's always very obvious to me that they have posted a letter to me with an already cancelled stamp. But they don't ever seem to get caught. However I can't see a prob reusing stamps that have missed the stamping machine. I soak these off and use again. ;)

I always keep the envelopes I get with junk mail and stick a self adhesive label over the address so I can use them for comps, etc. Just toss out the junk mail crap and say *thanks for the free envelope!!* :D

Un-used stamps

No, what I meant was that the machine which franks the stamps misses a lot of stamps on some sized envelopes, , so you can use them as they have never BEEN stamped/franked !

I don't mind paying the 50c for the stamp.... it is not going to break the bank and they only just raised the price for the first time in 10 years or so.

Don't mind to pay 50c stamp, but don't they add up? I spend almost $5 worth of stamps for just entering comp form 2 mag. and + envelopes...might actually give the bin a search :P:P

Another tip related to stamps, if you are using ones that have missed the franking machine, send it covered/stuck back down with sellotape (especially to things where you need to supply a stamped self addressed envelope), as once the envelope is back, you can peel the sellotape off without damaging the stamp and use again and again.

At the end of the day it feels good knowing you won that comp on a stamp you paid for.each to there own

I always get unstamped stamps on those padded bags. I always reuse the stamps as well as the bag/envelope and I have never had a problem with it. It saves just that little bit of paper every time :D

YEP, well I pay for my stamps, have no qualms about using one that has not been franked, but this idea of gluing or sticky taping over them to reuse constantly, well, no thanks

I was just sorting through today's post and spotted an unfranked stamp -- BONUS!!!!!

Would not have thought to look for it before I started comping!

So...is it wrong to re-use stamps, that have been missed by the machine?

Will you get a fine, if your caught using 'unfranked' stamps'? :)

How can they fine you if its unfranked?
I have changed my mind about sending a letter and have had to soak the stamp off to reuse.....

Just realised this thread was started in June 2003....:o

I have a gorgeous daughter that just loves stickers... can you see where i am going with this:D
Stamps are easy enough to peel off the body (and reglue) but when she gives me a 'well decorated' piece of paper, its a bugger to peel them all off! I do currently have 2 stuck to paper but cut out ready to glue on an envelope.
Sometimes I wonder... what will the post office think?!

I "rescue" unfranked stamps, but don't use them on comp entries, just boring other mail. Strange superstition??

kind of feel this way also and cannot be bothered to get a stamp off
I did try once and thought what a tricky little bugger.
wants to be attached so can stay attached
then threw it away as it looked tampered with

I just buy a $20 pack of stamps and then when gone buy another easier and not going to really kill me

I just feel better

I believe that $5 or $10 a week to a hobby that I enjoy won't kill me
after all I used to spend more than that on a pack of smokes every 2 days. now a much better use for my money

but have to be careful not to put a stamp on a reply paid as I have done several times now doh :(

I sort the mail at work and every now and then there are unfranked stamps - which are the only bonuses I get from the job I'm in.

I can't believe this thread is so old!!!!!!

I'm not a big mail in comper - but I'm slowlly starting.

I ALWAYS reuse envalopes. Especially the padded ones that prizes come in. They are very useful when I sell on ebay or post stuff to family.

Stamps come off quite easily.

Just cut paper around stamp and put in glass of water.

After about 15mins the separate.

Just leave to dry and then glue to envelope.
