Addressing the envelope

As a newbie I was wondering how important is it when addressing envelope. I have noticed that sometimes when they give the address to write to that competition will have a small c and comma's after a line in the address and I just wondered if other people follow it exactly or not;)

to be honest I dont think it really matters, just so long as it gets there

According to Australia Post guideliness punctuation should not be used when addressing an envelope as they have electronic machines that read the envelopes and generally anything outside the normal posting guidelines is spat out and manually handled - thus slowing down your mail delivery - not good if you are cutting it fine for a comp entry!

Here is a guide for you:-
http://www.auspost.com.au/BCP/0,1467,CH2092%257EMO19,00.html

And on the same page under RELATED topics you can do some examples of different address delivery scenarios and they show you the correct way to address the envelope.

I used to write my name & address in the middle of the back (you know the side without the stamp) but Australia Post have delivered them to me. So now make it small at the top of the page.

Its only happened 2 or 3 times, but still annoying if I didn't post them early.

I'm superstitious...I always write it exactly as they give it!

I agree kaz, I have a name stamper and I used to put it in the middle of the back of the envelope. On occasions, it was sent straight back to me, so now I make sure I put it on the flap section at the back.

Good luck, and congrats to you kaz on your cash win! :)

I am doing a Business Admin diploma so my envelopes go out in many different ways, always typed . I don't think it makes a difference but i do stick to PO preferred to ensure they get there in the time allocation. Sometimes i am late with sending and I use Express Post Envelopes and have had some good luck. Regardless I doubt that promoters look at the envelope or its presentation, it is still luck or the draw.

Oh god I didnt know that! I always put the quotation marks as they are often used on the address part on the EF. Wont be doing that from now on!

Someone on here suggested when writing your name and address on the back of the envelope do it sideways ...as in turn the envelope 90 degrees. That's what I do now!

Hi All,

I have been doing the Take 5 and That's Life magazines for years now and just joined this website a few months back, but have not won anything. I heard a rumour that one should decorate the envelope with stickers etc to make them stand out.
Does anyone know if this is true as my envelopes are really boring......

Cheers to all..
:P

probably used to be but if everyone does it then they are not going to stand out , you could do some and see if it works

Re Addressing Envelopes

Hi All!
I posted off an entry to New Idea Puzzler 43, yesterday 23/10/08 & received it back today 24/10/2008! I have always put my little return address on the back of the envelope across the seal - no more!
I suggest that one should do as a business does (we have a small business & never have had a problem!) & put your your return address on the top left hand side of the envelope, as a business usually does (on saying this this keep it small suggest 10 point Times Roman or Helvitca).
A lot depends on the people working on the machines at the Post Office sorters/exchange etc if they are over worked they will not check to see if all outward correspondence is facing the right way up etc!
Would appreciate any feed-back on this one please.
I am only a "Novice" but I think I have a good point here.
Have a great evening - Cheers!

If your letter is returned to your address instead of where you sent it blame the postie. He may be the only 'person' in the system that actually looked at your envelope on a personal basis. It may have been thru multiple machines but when they process from13000 to 35 000 letters per hour its not very personal and if your letter gets turned around the operators often dont notice.
Thats why making your return address different to where it is going is a great idea.
And decorating them may or may not be effective. but when the envelope becomes a threeD work of art be careful it can then be considered oversize and require more postage. whilst it will be delivered..... unpaid and underpaid entries are often deemed invalid.
For those of us who add a few stickers hoping it will make our entry stand out be aware there are some amazingly creative people out there who must have way too much time on their hands:D:D:(

Within 2 weeks I had 3 envelopes returned to me. Two of them had my address stickers on the back top left corner of the envelope and the 3rd had my return address also written on the back top left hand side in small writing. I couldnt believe it, and I ended up missing the comp dead line.

So I dont know if it really matters where you write it, as long as its clear. and hopefully it wont be returned :D

I have started to buy and use Australia Post prepaid envelopes. Cheaper if you buy a box of 500. But I am sure even Austarlia Post wouldnt have a problem with these. They are convenient to have in the house - too convenenient sometimes as everyone else grabs one:D

Most of these problems can be avoided by using envelopes with the postcode boxes printed on the front.

LOL, yesterday I received a baseball cap from Sydney Markets with a note of appreciation from the "promotions team" thanking me for decorating my envelopes for the Everybody's Body comp. Had to think about that, then realised that as I'd had a lot of entries, I'd sent some in coloured envelopes with fruit stickers. They didn't win, though!

I too got a thank you and a gift from one comp for decorating the envelope with my son. It was a very pleasant surprise for both of us!

I write the same details as givern (no commas or fullstops).
I use stickers on my envelopes..I Know they help because my mum was picking up a prize for me and saw all the envelopes with sickers on them so now i know. ;)
