Where do people get their avatars from?

Is it hard to attach them to your username?

Some of you guys just have gorgeous avatars and I was wondering whether you're all computer geniuses (genii?) or something...

Any good sites you can recommend?

Yes, thanks very much WhitePointer for ALL the information. I shall definitely be setting my own avatar up very soon!

(if I end up getting something very "young" it's because I'm going through a mid-life crisis - about to turn 40 in September - but if I put something funny up, then you'll know that I've gotten over the crisis and am just so over everything):P
